Discovery Findings

NC State has a unique campus culture with many reasons for the community to call it home. During pop-up events on campus, students were asked “Why is NC State home to you?” and below are some of the answers we heard.

Three open forums and fourteen pop-up sessions were attended by more than 400 people total. The campus community provided input on spaces that should be preserved or transformed. The maps below combine votes received while on campus and show hot spots for desired change and areas that are well loved.

Areas That Should Be Preserved

The spaces with the most preserve votes are The Court of North Carolina, The Free Expression Tunnel, Talley Student Union, Carmichael Gym, The Brickyard, and Hunt Library. The secondary spaces are The Oval, Park Shops, SAS, Bragaw Hall, Derr Track and Soccer Field, Gardner Arboretum, the Open Space between Own and Tucker Hall, Governers Scott Courtyard, and Nelson Hall. Areas That Should Be Transformed

The spaces with the most transform votes are the tunnel near the Coliseum, Bragaw Hall, the intersection of Avent Ferry and Western, Lee Hall, Fountain Dining Hall, Dabney Hall, Broughton Hall, 111 Lampe. The spaces with the next highest number of votes are Tower Hall, the open space on top of the Monteith Deck, the intersection of Pullen and Western, Clark Hall, Kamphoefner Hall, the south wing of Gardner Hall, Dan Allen at the railroad tracks. A survey was conducted to gather insights from the campus community, students, staff, and faculty. The results show how the campus is used and offer feedback and options on different areas of campus. Over 2,000 people responded, with a breakdown of respondents as follows:

Students top places they would like to see changed are The Oval, Tower Hall, intersection of Western and Avent Ferry, Clark Hall, Talley Student Union, Fountain Dining, Lee Hall, Sullivan Hall, Dabney Hall, The Brickyard, Doak Field and Poe Hall.

Places that represent NC State culture the most to students are Hunt Library, The Oval, Carmichael Gym, Talley Student Union, The Brickyard, Court of North Carolina Carter-Finley Stadium and the Memorial Belltower.

Buildings that have students’ favorite classrooms are Hunt Library, Engineering III, Fitts-Woolard Hall, Nelson Hall, 111 Lampe, Park Shops and SAS Hall. Students’ least favorite classrooms are in Dabney Hall, Broughton Hall, Williams Hall, and Bostian Hall.Students mostly drive on Western Rd, Pullen Rd and Avent Ferry.

Top walking routes are Cates Ave, Morrill Rd, Dan Allen and a route just south of the railroad tracks from the Coliseum deck to the Lee and Sullivan Halls.

Students who took the survey mostly live in apartments just west of the Dan Allen Deck, Lee Hall, Wood Hall, Wolf Village Apartments, and the east side of Centennial.

Students eat mostly at Tower Hall, Talley Student Union, Fountain Dining, Clark Hall, Case Hall, Hill Library and along Hillsborough.

Many students never go to the Greek Village, Bragaw Hall, Weaver Labs, Jordan Hall, Weisiger Brown Athletic Facilities, Clark Hall, Residence halls along eastern boarder of campus and the Partners and Venture buildings on the west side of Centennial Campus.

The top areas where students don’t feel safe are along Hillsborough Street, at the tunnels connecting North and Central campus, the intersection of Avent Ferry and Western and at The Brickyard. Students don’t feel welcome at residences on the east side of central campus and Talley Student Union.

Faculty voted for Tompkins Hall, Riddick Hall, David Clark Labs, Nelson Hall, Withers Hall and Park Shops as their favorite buildings to teach in. The least favorite buildings to teach in are: Dabney, 111 Lampe, Broughton, and Gardner Hall. The top places to collaborate for faculty are in Hunt Library, Talley Student Union, Engineering II, Engineering III, Jordon Hall, Williams Hall, Thomas Hall, Polk Hall, Hill Library, Tompkins Hall.

Faculty view the top places that represent NC State culture to be The Belltower, The Brickyard, The Court of North Carolina, Talley Student Union, Hunt Library.

Areas for improvement that got the most votes from faculty are Dabney Hall, Williams Hall, Gardner Hall, the intersection of Avent Ferry and Western, the intersection of Pullen and Western, and Tompkins Hall.

Faculty feel least comfortable in the Free Expression Tunnel and at the intersection of Western and Avent Ferry.

The top faculty walking routes are Lampe Dr, the north side of The Brickyard from Nelson Hall to Gardner Arboretum, Morrill Rd, Cates Ave, from Dan Allen Deck to Williams Hall and between Hill Library and the Free Expression Tunnel.

The most difficult areas to navigate for faculty are at the intersection of Western Ave and Avent Ferry Dr., along Pullen Rd between Cates and Western, at the intersection of Cates and Morrill, intersection of Cates and Dan Allen, intersection of Dan Allen and Western.

The areas that represent NC State’s culture the most to staff are Hunt Library, The Oval, Talley Student Union, Court of North Carolina, The Brickyard, The Belltower, Holladay Hall, and The Free Expression Tunnel.

NC State staff would like to see improvements at the intersection of Western and Avent Ferry, The Coliseum Parking Deck, Governers Scott Courtyard, and Gardner Hall.Most NC State staff have offices in Talley Student Union, 111 Lampe, Admin Services II, Admin Services III, Broughton Hall, and Patterson Hall.

Top ideal office locations are Talley Student Union, Admin Services III and Park Shops. NC State staff don’t feel safe at the tunnel near the Coliseum Parking Deck, the Dan Allen Parking Deck, the intersection of Western and Avent Ferry, and along Rocky Branch Creek. Places that feel unwelcome to staff are Bragaw Hall, Venture and Partners buildings on Centennial Campus.

Most Staff use Pullen Rd, Westen, Varsity Avent Ferry and Morrill Road as driving routes around campus. Popular walking routes are Cates Ave, the Rocky Branch Creek Trail, Sullivan Drive, Dan Allen Dr., Stinson, and a route directly south of the railroad tracks spanning from the Coliseum Deck to Dan Allen.

The areas that most represent culture to the community are The Coliseum, Talley Student Union, The Court of North Carolina and The Brickyard.

The top spaces the community wishes to maintain are The Court of North Carolina, The Brickyard, Talley Student Union, and Lake Raleigh Woods. The top places to be improved are Pullen Rd, Tennis courts near Carmichael Gym and the Spring Hill House.

The most common community driving routes are Pullen Rd, Morrill Dr, Cates between Pullen and Morrill Dr, Avent Ferry, Dan Allen and Hillsborough. The most common walking routes the community takes are the north side of the Coliseum parking deck to the free expression tunnel, Varsity drive, and from Talley Student Union to the Court of North Carolina by way of Stinson Drive. Another common route is from the free expression tunnel north through The Brickyard to Hill Library. The top destinations are Talley Student Union, Carmichael Gym, Hill Library, Hunt Library, and the Coliseum.

The areas where the community doesn’t feel safe or welcome are not conclusive, however two votes for unwelcoming places are located in the open space east of Weaver Labs and the parking area east of SAS Hall.
